- Speaking of the Perception (some of you were, anyway), I recently emailed
- a question about availability to Scott Bennett of DPS. His reply I just
- received today was:
-
- "Yes, it started shipping end of June. It is currently only shipping with
- Windows 3.1/3.11 software, NT will be added shortly."
-
- I sent a follow-up question about distribution channels. I'll pass along

-
- BTW, I seem to recall in earlier dicussions of the product that someone
- out there had a beta version (Lee S.?). If anyone has seen one...any

- Attention all you Lightwavers,
-
- You've probably heard about the Digital Fantasies animation video my
- company was working on which was to be a a tape full of animations
- created completely in Lightwave. I got a pretty good response from you
- here on the interenet and infact you'll see a commercial for it on
- Issue#1 of Lightspeed. We are still a little skim on animations, but
- I'll work with what I have if I must. This post is a final notice to
- those of you who may not have seen earlier posts or who now have some
- material you would like to submit for inclusion. It would be a way to
- show off your talents to others and prospective employers. The tape will
- be sold through our toll free order line and should be available shortly
- in retail stores carrying Lightwave products. You will get a free copy
- of the tape when its all completed should you submit something to us. We
- will begin editing the tapes we have received in about 3 weeks, so please
- hurry. There are also some of you who submitted vhs copies and said you
- would send a higher end tape format as soon as we decided what we wanted
- to use. I've sent your replies and now I need to get those higher end
- tape formats sent right away. If you would like more information, please
- e-mail me and I'll send you a detailed message. The tapes will be
- shipping next month, and to the many of you who have already submitted
- something, you'll get your free copies in the mail sometime next month as
- well.

-
- Yes, you are doing something wrong. :) Here's the trick: When you have two
- objects, one with the texture applied normally, and have that object's
- geometry morphed into the shape of a second object, the texture will
- stretch to fit the morphed geometry. If you save that as transformed and
- reload it as a single object, then there is no morphed geometry -- and
- hence no morphed texture either. It is the act of morphing the geometry
- that warps the texture. Once you "freeze" the shape of the object and use
- it without morphing then textures will act just like they do on any other
- Lightwave object. Think of it this way -- by morphing object 1 100% to the
- shape of object 2, and saving object 1 in that transformed state, you are
- merely making a duplicate of object 2, and textures will act on that
- duplicate just as they would act on the original object 2.
-
- You really need to have both objects in the scene -- the distored one set
- to 100% object disolve, and the "normal" one with 100% morph into the
- distored shape. Then you will get the warped texture effect you are after.

- I remember reading that one of the partial full length rough cuts was
- shown to a selected audience of Lucas's freinds and contemporates, like
- Speilberg and Coppolla, and they all hated it with a passion. When
- Lucas came back with it re-edited and with the sound and other

- NT 3.51 definitely breaks the Watcom debugger, so think twice
- about installing it if you write your own code and use Watcom.
-
- A source inside Microstuffed claimed that 3.51 fixed the terrible

- LW rendering times, I'm only a casual reader of this group...),

- How do you model polygons which have smooth curved lines and straight
- lines? I know you can make splines, and I know you can join dots, but how
- do you make polygons which have both?
-
- Say you sketch a wiggly line and the you want to close the ends with a
- flat line? Or how about a UFO type shape, adamski style, which has a
- curved dome at the top, a straight line for the turret, a curve for the
- bottom dome and a straight line across the bottom.
-
- So some of the curves are made with CTRL-P and others simply by making
- two dots and hitting P. I dunno, I'm all out of explanations.

- Lucas' plans have always been to make nine movies (this info comes only
- from what I have read. I have no inside information). The first three
- were to take place in the past, when Jedi Knights were thriving, or at

- The only characters that were to appear in all nine movies were C3P0 and

- So reshooting the whole movie with younger actors has to be the stupidest

- Of course, I can't wait to see what they do with special effects for the

- The easiest way I've found to pick out predefined surfaces is to load
- the object in modeler, choose polygon at the bottom of the screen, and hit
- "W" on the keyboard which will bring up the stats window. You can then
- scroll through the list of surfaces and choose the "+" button beside
- the "with surfaces" field. At that point you can cut, rename, or what
- ever you desire. Hope this helps!

- : a pretty unusual add-in, but maybe it would be worth doing that way as an

-
- : Just a thought.
-
- Why couldn't you just write yourself a text file using a simple word
- processor or a notepad and keep track of your projects that way? I know
- it isn't quite the same as having the notes embedded in the file itself,
- but it wouldn't cause that much extra grief to keep a little text file in
- the same directory, called PROJECT NOTES or something similar.
-
- That way you could keep notes on OBJECTS in the object directory, notes
- on IMAGES in the IMAGES directory, or what have you. It might take a little
- discipline, but in time, you'll get used to keeping notes in the proper
- directories. This way you could keep track of scene file names. I know
- that by the time I've finished a complex scene there are 20 files named
- "CREATURE.MOVE.TEST1" up to "CREATURE.MOVE.TEST20", and then
- "CREATURE.MOVE.FINAL1" up to "CREATURE.MOVE.FINAL5" with many other names
- in between. If I had just written a small text file in the directory, I'd
- know that "...FINAL4" had an incorrect shadow in one corner of the set, or
- that the objects I used were not the final ones, but stand-ins, etc...
-
- Of course, I am preaching what I do not practice. I have done more than
- 20 TV ads with Lightwave, and I have NOT kept track of my scenes.
- However, I have recently begun to do that since I have had to go back to
- old scenes, and getting back into the mindset I was in when I created
- them takes almost as much time as it would to re-create the scene file.
-
- Sigh...
-
- (But hey, if the NewTek guys want to put that in the code, well, I
- support that fully!)

- You might try making a curve and then doing a Freeze to change it
- to a polygon. Then you can go back in where you want the straight
- parts and delete some points along a section of the polygon to give
- you a straight section. You might have to then use Drag to get the
- endpoints of the straight part where they're supposed to be.
-
- Or, you make small portions of the outline with disks or ovals
- where you have a semi-constant rate of curvature, and then get rid of
- the uneccessary points and make the polygon out of the rest.
-
- Or, you can always just create each point by hand. There are some
- odd-ball shapes you can't do any other way.

- on the LW layout scene panel. You could shift click on some objects,

- I just purchased the pre-release for Windows NT 3.5 Intel and it is

- I just finnished a demo for one our customers. He was mostly interessted in
- things I didn't worked with yet ... so it was quite interessting ;-)
-
- Anyway "Lathe" has a feature which isn't documented. As we all know you can
- use it for "spinning" curves around a center to make a cup or stuff like
- that. Also doing only a portion of such object is possible. The difference
- lies in the handling of the end. A cup has of course no ending polygons, but
- a portion (spinned less than 360 degrees) has!
-
- To my knowledge these end polygons are only omitted if the roation is
- positive. That means, if the starting angle is smaller than the ending angle.
- This means start of 360 and end of 0 with 16 sides gives you 17 sides
- with a closing polygon on each end. In this special case you get two
- antiparallel polygons on the same spot (0 degrees) and new points on
- the same spot, too (which could be merged). But the feature is, that this
- rotated object can be opened through what ever operation.
-
- I guess this is a feature ... but I am not sure.

- Here's what I've found out about upgrade offers and special deals.
-
- 1. Stand-Alone Amiga LightWave owners can upgrade to any one
- platform of their choice for $150. Aditional platforms are
- full price.
-
- 2. Toaster owners can upgrade to the full 4.0 Toaster suite,
- including new switcher, CG, paint and LightWave for $550.
-
- 3. Toaster owners can buy an additional copy of LightWave on
- any platform for $650.
-
- 4. Owners of qualified 3D packages, including 3D Studio, can
- purchace a copy of LightWave on any platform for $650 in exchange
- for their manual cover.
-
- 5. Educational institutions can purchance a single copy of
- LightWave for any one platform and get four additional hardware
- keys for $1300. This get you five copies of LightWave for $260
- each.
-
- NewTek should be contacted directly regarding any of the upgrades.
- Authorized dealers can distribute educational packages. I'm not sure
- if you can get the trade up from dealers or not.

- Bones do influence along their whole legnth. The problem is that ALL
- bones in an object influence (to some extent) the ENTIRE object. Soooo,
- what may be happening to you is that bones that are stationary are keeping
- the limb from moving the way you want it to. Try turning on limited range
- for the stationary bones (in the torso and head) and for the bone(s)
- moving the limb. This can be tricky so you'll have to experiment.

- Another reason I didn't sell my Amiga... besides the point. I wish NewTek was
- upgrading LW through ftp and bbs the way they've been doing with the Flyer. They may
- not realize it but it's the little stuff like image and object converters, modeler
- macros etc. that get in the way of making LW PreRelease <useable>.
-
- On to something helpful... There is one windows based utility I'm aware of that will
- at least read DXF and LW, don't know if it writes either one though, TrueSpace.
-
- I hope John Foust got a good deal with NewTek and I wish him much success with
- Interchange, sounds like something the market needs very badly.

- Well, I hope they add the ability to use a surfaces "normal" as an option

- Ok. I'm going to try to make this as simple as I can. I've asked
- this question before, but I can't seem to get the results I need.
-
- OK... Here is the process.
-
- 1. I render out a sequence of images of a human walking. He
- is walking in a 64 X 64 pixel box, and he is on black.
-
- 2. I bring the rendered frames into procontrol, and use adpro
- to convert the images to a 256 color dpaint pallette (already created
- in dpaint).
-
- 3. I then bring the images into dpaint as single brushes and
- paste them in a 64 x 64 box. Here is the tricky Part --> these
- brushes will be used in a game where the black will be transparent.
- So, the edges around the human have to be cleaned so that there won't
- be dark colored dots around the man as he walks.
-
- Now... Lightwave apperently blends the edges of the humanoid
- in lightwave with the black background. If the background was grey...
- I would have grey colored dots around the human.
-
- Ok.... Things i've tried.
-
- 1. I've tried turning off antialiasing. This helps, but
- there are still dots. And, the quality of the rendered man is
- significantly worse without antialising.
-
- 2. I've tried alpha matte. This also helped, but there were
- still some dots, and at 64 X 64 every pixel counts. The alpha
- sometimes erased essential pixels that made up the picture....
-
-
- Please... Please ... HElp... I am so tired of cleaning up images.

- The version of DoubleSpace that came with MS-DOS 6.0 caused some problems when
- used in conjuction with SmartDrive. However, the general concept has been
- very safe in my personal experience. I have been using some type of disk
- compression on different machines for the last three years. I use a PC that
- has used DR-DOS 6.0's Superstor program for about three years now and no
- problems. I run DoubleSpace on my portable because disk drives for
- it are relatively expensive. Depending on the particulars, I/O can actually
- improve with compression software. The fact that processors are much faster
- than disks makes this possible. A compressed disk can be read faster, because
- the read pulls fewer physical bytes. Real world experience for most people is
- that the performance is about the same.
-
- Do a defrag and a scandisk before compressing a disk.
-
- Always back-up. You should be doing this anyway.
-
- Don't compress until you start to get low on drive space. The software
- drivers take up precious DOS upper memory.
-
- Drives are cheaper than two or three years ago. If you aren't comfortable
- using the technology, buy extra drives instead.

- I don't know of a direct way, but I just save the "source" surface as

- You have to save the texture and reload it into another surface.
- Lightwave makes this easy as the last surface you saved/ loaded is
- already there when you re-load it. I use an "s" as a temporary surface
- for that (saves getting lots of copies of old surfaces in my surface

-

- Stacker and Doublespace (Drivespace) are nutorious for buggy data storage. I
- never had a problem running the original MS release of Doublespace with DOS
- 6.0, but I knew alot of people who did. Generally, if disk compression
- routines screw up, they screw up big. If they don't screw up, the most you'll
- see is a fairly decent chunk of memory dedicated to their drivers.
-
- With the falling prices of hard drive storage, your probably better off just
- buying a small drive. Doublespace, in actuality, will only give yopu about
- 30% more space. That same amount of space (say ~350Mb for a 1Gb drive for
- example) can be picked up for less than $100 mail order.

- Here's something that makes creating these type of morph targets a bit
- easier: Rail Extrude a 2-point polygon (for the example of a film strip)
- along a curve to create your morph target. Then do a normal (straight)
- extrude of another two-point polygon with the *SAME NUMBER OF SEGMENTS*.
- Strangely enough, the two objects will morph just fine. Saves all that
- bending and twisting jazz. :)
- This also works for normal polygons with more than 2 points, of course.
-
- Some pitiful ascii-art illustrating the idea:
-
- * _______
- | / \ <- curve ______\
- |_____/ \ / / = Rail Extrude (Morph Target)
- | \_______/ (Or Multiple Rail Extrude)
- |
- * <- 2-point poly

- | (Direction of extrude) / (same # of segments)

- That initial setup of your shockwave seemed corret enough. Some while
- ago I saw a neato shock wave on a demo tape and then re-created my own.
- Instead of selecting layers though (which is time consuming and
- unneccesary) is to use falloff percentages and change your texture center
- so that the shock wave starts off bright and almost solid looking (High
- energy) at the beginning and then fades out to black on the inner ring.
- You can even add a 2nd thinner ring and parent that to the 1st ring as a
- trailer type shock which looks pretty good.
-
- To be fair, I saw the original shockwave on Dean Scotts demo tape and I
- then went on to modify it from there. You can see Dean's Demo tape in
- it's entirety by picking up Lightspeed #2 (in about 3 weeks). I don't
- know if this would just be plain repetitive, but if enough people were
- interested we could throw a short blurb (tutorial) in issue #4 on
- creating a really nice high end looking shockwave with a few twists.

-
- Yes - its the age old issue of what is or isn't broadcast quality. I'm sure I
- have read where the PAR has been used for final output that was broadcast
- nationally. I have also read that you are correct that the PAR is not used
- for final output on the above series but are used for testing. Broadcast
- quality from a signal standpoint is (someone correct me if I goof)
- quantifiable with electrical signal standards. From an image standpoint (how
- much JPEG artifacting is OK for instance), however, it is very subjective and
- not quantifiable. I think the PAR is up to the task from a signal standpoint.
- The image quality varies significantly enough that there are varying opinions
- on whether the actually image is acceptable. I have found that the various
- NTSC specific composite artifacts tend to hide many (though not all) of the
- PAR's shortcomings. Stuff that is VERY obvious when monitored using Y/C and
- especially Component outputs becomes obscured when viewed as composite output.
- Everything broadcast today becomes composite at some time before broadcast.
-
- Just my 2 cents on the subject.

- (Sure came in handy for the Voayger nacelles!). Glows were taken out of

- : will certainly help determine whether I stick with the Amiga (and go with
- : my 2 machines) or go with 1 faster clone (since multiple licenses to
- : render on multiple machines is not cost-effective).
-
- Here's the poop (AFAIK BTW)...
- Every version of 4.0 will ship with a stand alone ScreamerNet render
- program that can be controlled by the Copy of LightWave. LW can run
- either original ScreamerNet or the new improved ScreamerNet II. Orig SN
- is designed for backwards compatability with render engines that are
- networked and do not share any drives. This mode, however is really
- outdated by SNII which will work on any computers that can share drives
- and is much preferred because the nodes load and save scenes directly to
- shared drives rather than ftp'ing through the Amiga control machine.
-
- If you buy the Amiga version of 4.0, you receive the Amiga render node,
- Buy the Intel version and receive the Intel node, etc. You can run the
- ScreamerNet render software on up to 1000 machines, all controlled by
- one machine running one copy of LightWave.
-
- ScreamerNet control is open to third party, so you can have a program
- that could control a render farm and not have to worry about tying up the
- one version of LW you have.
-
- Cool Tip: You can run SN on a single machine and batch render LW scenes.
-
- That's the twuth thwwpppppppp

- I know that DPS, has made conversion utilities for .AVI files to play on the
- PAR. My question is how does the PAR deal with the sound in my .AVI files?
- Does it somehow interface with my soundblaster, and play back the sound

- Same question for the Perception.

- Whysoytanly!
-
- For the desired surface, simply go into any of the attribute channel
- Texture panels (T button) and the default texture type will be Planar.
- Now just click on the Automatic Size button and then the Texture
- Size button (after saying OK to the auto size warning msg) and
- write down the EXACT size in meters of that surface and use them
- to do the calcs. Then just click on Remove Texture to exit the
- panel so that it is left active for that surface. Now this assumes
- that the surface extends the length of the object. If it only occupies
- a couple polys in the middle or end of the object, for instance, then
- only that portion of the object will be measured. Also, if a sruface is
- a semi-circular ring of polys, then the Auto Size under Cylinder Mapping
- will return dimensions as if the ring were complete, IOW the diameter
- of an arc segment.

- IMHO NEVER send out your work..not only depending on client
- confidentiality issues there is the copyright deal..Face it cpyright laws
- are heinously lacking in this area and the whole issue of this was done
- with LW versus 3ds (i.e the viper arguement etc..)..As far as putting your

- For now if you are in a pinch you may also try to rent non linear

- here on my Amy 4000. There's a lot of video/audio & multimedia hardware
- options out there for Amy that a lot of typical Amy users don't even
- know about, and still use the machine for its convenient multi-tasking
- and etc. Truthfully, its really not fair to compare the platforms, I
- think they are both very different and obviously shine better depending
- on what your angle is. But the Amy DOES NOT SUCK. Its a wonderful machine,
- and shouldn't really be compared. If you want brute force and speed and
- have an application like LW where that is your main concern, then maybe
- something else would be better, but I would have to heavily consider
- whether the amount of speed increase from an 060/50 to a Pentium,
- for ONE or 2 apps, is really worth trading in everything else I do
- and like. For me, its an easy choice. Besides my Amy's I also have PC
- technology I use and work with. I could spend lots of money to try an
- do some of the same things on the PC (I have 2 Toasters/etc. and run
- production), but why? Its really better to have the best of both and
- use them together, but jeesh a PC is no replacement for the Amy unless
- all you wanna do is render LW. For me, I'd sell of my PC stuff and shoot
- for a Dec Alpha, but I wouldn't trade in the lot of it all. I'd try to
- use the best of what each platform has to offer and incorporate them
- all. If Escom really does do anything reasonable with the Amy then maybe
- people will begin to echo their feelings of the past when everyone was
- so thrilled, and seems to have forgotten.

- Thanks. A couple of other people suggested this as well.
- Another person recommended making a few grid objects. ie: add a

- Under the objects panel you can set it to render it's edges and then

- The Amiga sucks. PCs suck. Macs suck. All computers suck.
-
- If you don't see the problems with the Amiga and you use one, I can only
- assume you're completely biased and are just pretending to be stupid.
-
- Here's a quick list..
- - no networking support
- - flicker problems
- - problems with large drives
- - expensive
- - on-board video limitations
- - very limited software selection
-
- Now, I know Amiga sneebs will jump up and down and cry and scream. Please
- save it. I could make a very long list of what's wrong with PCs and Macs,
- too. But PC users don't treat their computer like a sacred holy relic,
- unlike some Amiga users.
-
- There are lots of things you can do better and easier on the PC then on
- the Amiga. And the future is NOT the Amiga - the magazines and developers
- and most users are GONE and not coming back, kids. Who is left? Basically,
- NewTek and the related companies. And who knows how long NewTek will have
- Amiga support? They've already announced a PC product and will be shipping
- final PC LW any day now.
-
- If you want to advise people against PCs, great. I think they are a pretty
- safe bet.

- This is much more work than what he initially said, the screen capture thing works
- wonders. I select the surface I want to paint in Modeller, shut off points and
- normals, so all I see is a wireframe with the areas I want to paint in yellow, here
- you have to make sure you have all the landmarks you need or any other bumps or knobs
- on the mesh so you can see them to paint them, or to add rust, etc. I then enlarge
- this on the screen to the size I think I want the bitmap texture and I capture it
- using Corel Capture, capturing the whole screen. I then go into Corel PAint and past
- the bitmap and crop it pretty close to what I actually need. I save the bitmap as a
- name I can easily reference, but I also include in the bitmap name the
- way the bitmap is to face, ie, X, Y, or Z. I started to do this and it
- speeds me up alot. Then I go into Photoshop and load the mesh bitmap
- capture and make it a bottom layer and have it about 10 percent
- transparent, just so I can see it enough to draw over it. When I am
- done painting, I crop it exactly to the mesh so it is boxed tightly,
- and I merge the layers and viola, you have your bitmap, and it is
- pretty exact also, I can easily add rust streams to the smallest of
- bolts, and it always comes out in line.
- I usually capture in bunches, and paint in bunches to save the hassle
- of always switching over.

- Hello Wavers all over the World.

- I'm planning to start a Dutch LightWave Art Gallery on the Internet,
- to show the Dutch people what this program is capable of.
- And now I'm looking for artwork to fill it. Anybody who wants to have

- The Amiga is probably comfortable to you because it is familiar, and the
- fun world of PCs is less familiar. I'd suggest getting familiar with the
- PC - they suck, but then all computers suck...they just suck in a
- different way then the Amiga.
